“…recent architectural work exploring new digital tools and process can be broadly categorized in terms of purpose as productive or generative.  The first, productive, is focused on enabling an architect to visualize, achieve of refine an architectural concept which has already been formally predetermined.  The second category of use concerns the generation of architectural form from data-inputs (referred to generally as parametric design).  …Bothcategories involve new technology… the key difference is in the way in which the digital processes are engaged creatively and the ultimate representational intent of the architect.”
                                        - Cynthia Ottchen, OMA – Office for Metropolitan Architecture

The digital workshop will investigate basic digital modeling techniques with the purpose of employing them in the design process.  Our focus will be the exploration of a wide variety of modeling tools within Rhinoceros 4.0 and basic rendering/material options within 3D studio Max.  The goal of the workshop is to build students’ comfort level and familiarity with the features of the software, so these tools may be implemented in the design studio.

The workshop offers an interactive lab based setting to collaboratively interface with the features of the software and other students.  The goal is not to cover all aspects of each software, but to build a foundation and set of techniques that students can continue to improve throughout the semester and beyond.

    Prerequisites:
    BasicAutoCAD, Photoshop skills
Some experience with 3-dimensional design (sketchUp, FormZ) is a plus
    Enthusiastic attitude

    Softwares covered:
    Rhinoceros 4.0 – modeling
    V-Ray – materials & rendering
    Photoshop CS5 – final composite

“Autodesk 3ds Max and Autodesk 3ds Max Design software provide powerful, integrated 3D modeling, animation, rendering and composing tools that enable artists and designers to more quickly ramp up for production.  The two versions share core technology and features, but for differentiated experiences and specialized toolsets for game developers, visual effect artists, and graphic designers on the one hand and architects, designers, engineers and visualization specialists on the other.”
    Autodesk

The 3ds Max workshop explores basic digital modeling and animation techniques with the purpose of employing them in the design process.  Our focus will be inuncovering a wide variety of dimensional modifiers within Autodesk 3ds Max. The workshop will also cover rendering/material options and the creation of short animation sequences.  The goal of the workshop is to build students’ comfort level and familiarity with the features of the software, so that these tools may be implemented into their design studios.

The 3d Max workshop offers an interactive lab based setting to collaboratively interface with the features of the software and other students.  The goal is not to cover all aspects of the software, but to build a foundation and establish a set of techniques that students can continue to improve throughout the semester and beyond.

    Prerequisites:
    BasicAutoCAD, Photoshop skills

Spatial data is now ubiquitous within many of the professional design disciplines that focus on the built environment, including: Architecture; Urban and Community Design; and Civil and Environmental Engineering. It is becoming increasingly necessary for these professionals to utilize Geographic Information Systems(GIS) data for base layer information, analysis and design purposes. However, the traditional software tools utilized by most GIS professionals, such as ESRI’s ArcGIS, are not the same tools utilized by designers of the built environment. Nevertheless, there is a need for architects, planners and other users of CAD software to be able to find and understand GIS data and be able to integrate this information into their CAD applications (including AutoCAD).

The digital workshop will investigate basic theory and practice of GIS as applied to fields related to architecture and planning. Our focus will be the exploration of a wide variety of tools within ArcGIS v10 and basic GIS theories related to spatial representation of data. The goal of the workshop is to build students’ comfort level and familiarity with the features of the software, so these tools may be implemented in the design studio.

The workshop offers an interactive lab based setting to collaboratively interface with the features of the software and other students.  The goal is not to cover all aspects of the software, but to build a foundation and set of techniques that students can continue to improve throughout the semester and beyond.

    Softwares covered:
    ArcGIS v10

    Class Dates:
    Wednesday Mar 21st: 6:00-9pm
    Wednesday Mar 28th: 6:00-9pm
    Wednesday Apr 4th: 6:00-9pm
