AARP AND AIAS ANNOUNCE 2008 “HOUSE OF FREEDOM” NATIONAL STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION WINNERS

AARP and the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) announce the winners of the Ethel Andrus Percy House of Freedom Design Competition. The program challenged students to learn about universal design and designing for an aging population while creating a single family home.

The objectives of this competition included researching, responding to and highlighting the unique aspects of designing a home that allows a person to age in place with dignity; building knowledge about materials, products and installation related to universal design and design for aging; and designing a home that accommodates the needs of a family regardless of age and ability. The competition received entries from high schools student through graduate level architecture and design students, coming from as far away as Hawaii and France.  Teams from over 40 schools participated in the program.

The judges appreciated the interesting envelope around the house, given the inventive and playful exterior.  The opportunity for multiple solar panels contributed to the sustainable nature of the house. The jury enjoyed that you could “wheel” around the entire property.

2007/2008 Design Build Studio

There are many exciting things happening at the University of South Florida’s School of Architecture and Community Design! The SACD Design/Build program is happy to be teaming up with the City of Temple Terrace’s Department of Parks and Recreation to design and build the Main Pavilion for the City’s new Riverfront park. Our Design/Build team, comprised of 12 graduate students from the SACD, spent the fall semester designing the pavilion, testing materials, conferring with the client and engineer and preparing construction documents. We are happy to report that the project is on schedule to begin construction from the start of spring semester. The construction of the Riverfront Park Pavilion will be a hands-on learning experience for everyone. Our group is being led by Design/Build program director Stanley Russell AIA, who has many years of experience as a designer and builder. Click on the tabs to see our process and be sure to check back for news and updates as the project unfolds.

SACD Alumni in the News

For most architects, walls are a tool for defining spaces. But for new Sarasotan Eva Schone, an intern architect in Carl Abbott's office, one wall in particular shaped her professional and philosophical perspectives.

Schone, 31, grew up in the former East Germany, whose capital was divided by the notorious Berlin Wall that was torn down when she was a teenager. That barrier gave her personal insight into how walls shape not just spaces, but also lives.
